Practising this profession requires real linguistic skills validated by a specialised diploma from a translation college or university. Technical expertise in translation software has also become indispensable for professional translators; this skill enabling the combining of efficiency with respect for client-specific glossaries or terminology.

Producing a quality translation is a complicated but necessary process. On the part of the translator, it involves perfect assimilation of the source message, backed up by in-depth terminological research, or, if need be, consultation with specialists in the relevant field, to produce a rewording and/or adaptation of the source message, respecting the target language and the specific cultural characteristics of the country for which the message is destined. Hence the need to call on professional and specialised translators who only translate into their mother tongue.
